Walter Lawry Buller (1838–1906)
New Zealand interpreter, lawyer, and ornithologist. Native interpreter in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, 1855. Resident magistrate in Manawatu, 1862; transferred to Wanganui, 1865. Published Essay on the ornithology of New Zealand (1865). Went to London, 1871–4, to publish the History of the birds of New Zealand (1873). Practised as a barrister in New Zealand, 1874–86. Returned to London as commissioner for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in 1886. Knighted, 1886. FRS 1879.
