Aleksey Ivanovich Butakoff (Алексей Иванович Бутаков) (1816–69)

Russian naval officer, navigator, and hydrographer. Explored and surveyed the Aral Sea, 1848–9; applied Mercator’s projection and enabled publication of the first map of the sea in 1850.
