William Hay Caldwell (1859–1941)

Scottish zoologist and businessman. Scholar of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, 1878–83. Demonstrator in comparative anatomy, Cambridge University, 1882. Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, 1883–9. First holder of the Balfour studentship. Confirmed the long-disputed fact that the platypus laid eggs. Went into business as a paper manufacturer in Inverness-shire in 1893.
