Physician and pharmacologist. MD, Edinburgh, 1862. Research assistant in materia medica, University of Edinburgh, 1864–70; professor from 1877. Assistant physician, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, 1869–74; physician from 1878. Specialised in the effects of poisons. Knighted, 1902. FRS 1877.
