John Cleves Symmes (1742–1814)

American legislator, lawyer, and land speculator. Fought in the American War of Independence. Helped draft New Jersey’s state constitution in 1777. Associate judge in the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1777. Migrated to Ohio in 1788.
