John Venn (1834–1923)

Philosopher and antiquary. Sixth wrangler in the mathematical tripos at Cambridge University, 1857; fellow of Gonville and Caius College, 1857. Ordained priest, 1859; curate of Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and Mortlake, Surrey, successively; resigned from the clergy in 1883. Returned to Cambridge in 1862. Lecturer in moral science. The originator of Venn diagrams in On the diagrammatic and mechanical representation of propositions and reasonings (1880). Author of many biographical reference works. FRS 1883.
