Henry Alford (1810–71)

Clergyman and biblical scholar. Attended Trinity College, Cambridge; BA, 1832. Curate of Ampton, Suffolk, 1833; vicar of Wymeswold, Leicestershire, 1835; minister of Quebec Chapel, Portman Square, Marylebone, 1853. Elected fellow of Trinity College, and ordained priest, 1834. Appointed dean of Canterbury, 1857. Published forty-eight books, and many articles, hymns, sermons, and tracts, as well as poetry.
