Johns Hopkins (1795–1873)

American merchant and financier. Formed a wholesale business with his brothers in 1820, from which he retired in 1845. Became a leading venture capitalist and financier, investing heavily in railroads and waterfront property. Endowed a university and a hospital in Baltimore in 1867.
