William Sanders (1799–1875)
Geologist. Seed and hop merchant in Bristol until 1856. A founder of the Bristol Institution for the Advancement of Science, Literature, and the Arts, 1835; honorary curator, 1856–72. Carried out a detailed geological survey of the Bristol area, 1835–62. First president of the Bristol Naturalists’ Society, 1862–75. Director of Bristol Waterworks from 1865. Elected a fellow of the Geological Society of London, 1839. FRS 1864.
