Joseph Butler (1692–1752)

Moral philosopher and theologian. BA, Oxford University (Oriel College), 1718; ordained priest, 1718. Bishop of Bristol, 1738–50; of Durham, 1750–2. Published several works on religious issues, including Analogy of religion (1736).
