Friedrich Michelis (1815–86)

German Catholic theologian and philosopher. Professor extraordinarius at the Lyceum Hosianum in Braunsberg (Eastern Prussia), 1864; professor, 1869. Member of the Prussian Chamber of Deputies, 1866; of the North German Parliament, 1867. Editor of the journal Natur und Offenbarung (Nature and revelation), 1855–69. Opponent of materialism and evolution. Excommunicated in 1871 as a result of his opposition to the dogma of papal infallibility.
