George Frederick Upton, 3d Viscount Templetown (1802–90)

Irish soldier and politician. Educated at Eton College, and Christ Church College, Oxford. Entered the Coldstream Guards in 1823; lieutenant, 1825, captain, 1826; major, 1837; lieutenant-colonel, 1841; colonel, 1851; major-general, 1858. Saw active service in the Crimean War. Retired from the army in 1877. Conservative MP for Antrim, 1859–65. Succeeded to the title, 1863. Representative peer for Ireland, 1866. Knighted, 1869.
