Eduard Josef (Eduard) Tangl (1848–1905)

Polish botanist. Studied botany at Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine) University, 1865–9; doctorate, 1870; privat-dozent, 1871–6. Professor of agricultural chemistry and botany, school of farming, Dublany, 1874–6; professor extraordinarius of botany at the K.k. Franz-Josefs-Universität in Czernowitz, Bukowina (now Chernivtsi, Ukraine), 1876–81; professor of botany and pharmacognosy, 1881–1905. First director of the Czernowitz University Botanical Garden and Botanical Institute, 1877–1905. Published on the anatomy and cytology of plants, and identified strands of cytoplasm connecting plant cells, later known as plasmodesmata.
