Charles Grant Blairfindie (Grant) Allen (1848–99)

Canadian-born writer on science and evolution. BA, Oxford, 1871. Taught in schools in Brighton, Cheltenham, and Reading. Professor of mental and moral philosophy at a college in Spanish Town, Jamaica, 1873–6. Developed his own theory of evolution based largely on the works of Herbert Spencer. A regular contributor to magazines. Wrote popular novels, some under pseudonyms.
