Edward Albert Schäfer (1850–1935)

Physiologist. MD, University College, London, 1874. An original member of the Physiological Society from 1876. Studied the evolution of the nervous system and published on several areas of anatomy and physiology. Professor of physiology, University College, London, 1883–99; University of Edinburgh, 1899–1933. Published a popular textbook of physiology in 1898. Took the name Sharpey-Schafer in 1916. Knighted, 1913. FRS 1878.
