William Lloyd Garrison (1805–79)

American editor, abolitionist, and religious reformer. Newspaper editor in Massachusetts and Vermont in the 1820s; moved to Baltimore to co-edit The genius of universal emancipation, 1828. Became a cause célèbre after being imprisoned for refusing to pay a fine imposed on him for libelling a merchant involved in the slave trade, 1830. Became the editor of the Liberator in Boston in 1830, and called for immediate emancipation of slaves. Also became an supporter of women’s rights.
