American Express Company

American express transport company. Founded as an association of investors by Henry Wells and William G. Fargo in 1850. Merged with the Merchant Union Express Company, 1868. Introduced money orders in 1882; travellers’ cheques in 1891. Concentrated on banking and travel services after nationalisation of the express transport industry in 1918.
