Elie Abel Carrière (1818–96)

French botanist and horticulturist. Started work at the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle at the age of 14 and rose to the rank of head perennial grower. Head of the botanic garden, Zaragossa, Spain, in the early 1860s; head of the nursery, Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle, 1862–9. Editor of the Revue Horticole from 1862; editor-in-chief, 1869–96. Worked on peach trees, dimorphism, and hybridity.
