Scottish botanist and geologist. Studied at Edinburgh University and New College, Edinburgh. Assistant, botany department, British Museum, 1859; keeper, 1871–95. Botanist, Royal Agricultural Society, 1871–1909. President, Linnean Society of London, 1886–90. FRS 1871.
