Thomas Purdie (1843–1916)
Scottish-born chemist. Best known for research in optical activity and stereochemistry. BSc, Royal School of Mines, 1875. Appointed demonstrator in the chemical laboratories of the Royal College of Science at South Kensington by Edward Frankland, 1875. Studied under Johannes Wislicenus in Würzburg from 1878; PhD 1880. Professor of chemistry, St Andrews University, 1884–1909. FRS 1895.
