Joseph Strutt (1765–1844)

Cotton manufacturer and philanthropist. Established a Lancasterian (monitorial) school and a Mechanics’ Institute in Derby. Opened his house in Derby, with its painting and sculptures, to the public. Served as mayor of Derby, 1835. Presented an arboretum to the people of Derby in 1840.
