Edward Ball Knobel (1841–1930)

Chemist and astronomer. Manager and chief dye chemist to Courtaulds, 1875–92. Director of the photographic materials manufacturer, Britannia Works Company Ltd (Ilford Ltd from 1900), 1893–4; managing director, 1895–1907. Made substantial contributions to astronomy in his spare time. Served on the council of the Royal Astronomical Society of London, 1876–1930; president, 1892–3 and 1900–1.
