Frederick Douglass (1818–95)

American abolitionist and journalist. Lived in slavery until 1838, when he escaped to New York. Became a lecturer in the anti-slavery movement. Wrote the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass (1845). Launched a journal, the North Star (later Frederick Douglass’ Paper), in 1847. US minister to Haiti, 1889–91. Lifelong campaigner against slavery.
