Francis Rawdon Chesney (1789–1872)
Officer in the Royal Artillery. Visited Turkey, 1829; surveyed the isthmus of Suez to assess the practicability of a canal, 1830; explored the valley of the Euphrates, 1831; and navigated the lower Euphrates and explored the Tigris, 1835–7. Stationed at Hong Kong, 1843–7. Major-general, 1855; general, 1868. Published accounts of his surveys.
