Charles I, king of Scotland, England, and Ireland (1600–49)

Succeeded his father, James VI and I, in 1625. Rebellions in Scotland and Ireland in 1640 and 1641, fears that he was a Catholic sympathiser, and disputes with parliament, led to civil war. Surrendered in 1646; tried and executed, 1649.
