Scottish pathologist. MD, Edinburgh, 1848. Demonstrator of anatomy, University of Glasgow, and pathologist to the royal infirmary, 1848–55. Assistant pathologist in Crimean War, 1855. Professor of pathology at the army medical school, 1860–92. FRS 1873. Knighted, 1887.
