Birth: Ferrox Hall, Tonbridge, England (18 May 1777) Death: Halstead Place, Kent (01 January 1852) Education: Tonbridge School and Eton School; Queen's College, Cambridge Career: Studied mechanics and mineralogy; built a laboratory, Tunbridge and Humphry Davy did many experiments there; made the largest yet galvanic battery (1813); father's bank collapsed and he lost all his money (1816); John became Librarian, Department of Antiquities, British Museum.
