Mr Regent Alfred John Bidwell (12 June 1869–7 April 1918)

British architect responsible for many buildings in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, including Raffles Hotel. Often known as RAJ Bidwell, he was born in Camberwell, South London. In the early 1890s he joined the Public Works Department in Selangor and there designed many government buildings in Kuala Lumpur. In 1895 he joined the architecture firm Swan and maclaren in Singapore where he designed Raffles Hotel (1899) among many other buildings. Between 1897 and 1911 Bidwell dominated the colonial style work of Swan and maclaren. Having firmly established his reputation he left Swan and Maclaren to set up his own practice. Bidwell died in Singapore aged 48, and was buried at Bidadari Cemetery. He was survived by his wife Edith Allen, Charles Allen's 5th child who was born in 1870, and his two sons.
