Professor John Stuart Blackie (28 July 1809–2 March 1895)

British classical and Gaelic scholar. Born in Glasgow and educated at the private school Merson's Academy, and then at Marischal College (1821-1824). He studied theology and law but did not pursue either career in earnest. He married Eliza Wyld on 19 April 1842. Blackie published prolifically about politics, philosophy, religion, the Greek language and Scotland. His translation of Goethe's Faust was published in 1834, and following his translation of Aeschylus in 1850 he was appointed Professor of Greek at the University of Edinburgh. He died and is buried in Edinburgh.
