Sir Thomas Pretious Heslop (1823–1885)

Born in Bermuda and became a physician after studying at Trinity College, Dublin. Settled in Birmingham in 1848 where he spent the rest of his life. Founded the Free Hospital for Children in 1861, the Women's Hospital in 1871 and the Skin and Lock Hospital in 1880. Heslop established the Midland Medical Society and the Birmingham Philosophical Society. He was Governor of King Edward School as well as chairman of Mason College where he was also a Trustee from 1773. He helped to establish the library at Mason College by providing it with 11,000 books. Information accessed from Oxford DNB 21.11.2011.
