Mr John Thomas Cockerell (1819–1907)

Born in London, England. He arrived in Sydney, Australia in 1841 as a Steward on the vessel Jane. In 1843 he married 15 year old Jane Manuell and the same year the couple left for Hong Kong. In 1848 he returned to Australia as the owner and Captain of the vessel "Young Hebe". In 1871-72 he travelled to the Aru Islands in his schooner "Naturalist" to collect natural history specimens. Later he was known as a taxidermist. He died in Lismore, New South Wales, Australia.
