William St John Fremantle Brodrick (14 December 1856–13 February 1942)

British politician, 9th Viscount (1907) and (1920) 1st Earl of Midleton. Broderick was born in London and educated at Eton College and Balliol College, Oxford. Brodrick entered Parliament as Conservative member for West Surrey in 1880. He lost his Parliamentary seat, at Guildford, which he had held since 1885 in the 1906 general election. During his time as a Member of Parliament, he held the office of Secretary of State for War (1900-1903), Secretary of State for India (1903-1905) and Leader of the Irish Unionist Alliance (1910-1919). In the 1920 New Year Honours he was created Earl of Midleton; Midleton being on the south coast of Ireland between Cork City and Youghal. The title became extinct with the death of Brodrick's son in 1979. In 1880 Midleton married Hilda Charteris who died in 1901. After Hilda's death Brodrick married Madeleine Cecilia Carlyle in 1903. He died aged 85, at the family seat, Peper Harrow, Surrey, England.
