Mr Charles Robert Darwin (12 February 1809–19 April 1882)

British biologist, geologist and author. The fifth of sixth children of physician Robert Waring Darwin (1766-1848) and Susannah Wedgwood (1765-1817). Studied medicine at Edinburgh University 1825-1827 but did not complete degree. Matriculated at Cambridge University in February 1828 and left in 1831 with a BA. Naturalist on board HMS Beagle, 1831-1836. Discovered natural selection in 1838 and co-published the idea with ARW in 1858. His famous book, On the Origin of Species, was published in 1859. Married his first cousin Emma Wedgwood in 1839. They had ten children, eight of whom reached adulthood. FRS.
