Mr Mark Alton Barwise (6 June 1881–29 May 1937)

American attorney, politician and believer in Spiritualism. Born in Chester, Maine he became an attorney and in 1925-26 he was elected to the Maine State Senate. He was the only publicly practicing Spiritualist known to have been elected to a state office in the United States. During 1905/6 he was President of the Temple Heights Spiritualist camp meeting and of the Maine State Association of Spiritualists. He was also a Freemason. During his political career he advocated for the separation of church and state and supported Sunday trading.
