Mr Henry Walter Bates (8 February 1825–16 February 1892)

British entomologist. Professional collector of natural history specimens and Assistant Secretary to the Royal Geographical Society of London from 1864 to 1892. President of the Entomological Society of London, 1868-1869 and 1878. He accompanied ARW to the Amazon in 1848 and spent 11 years collecting there. Discoverer of Batesian mimicry, the book about his South American travels is one of the most highly regarded of its genre. FRS.
