Mr Arthur Bennett (19 June 1843–2 May 1929)

British master plumber and amateur botanist. His profession is described in the 1871 census as "Master plumber". From his Croydon home he cultivated various species specialising in pond weeds. He wrote the revised The Potamogetons (Pond Weeds) of the British Isles, with descriptions of all the species, varieties and hybrids, (1915) from original notes by Alfred Fryer. In 1878 he became a member of the Botanical Sub-committee of the Croydon Natural History and Scientific Society (then Croydon Microscopical and Natural History Club). He was also a member of the Royal Microscopical Society. After his death, Bennett's widow was awarded a Civil List pension in recognition of his contribution to botanical science.
