The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Treasury commissioners have approved reform plan for Mint. First step will be to terminate contract with company of Moneyers. Other reforms can be delayed. Make necessary preparations for Mint staff to take over those duties.
Treasury commissioners will not authorize changes to Mint Board, mint office, or assay office until solicitors can determine legal ramifications. Changes in Melting department must await counter-proposal from G. W. G. Mathison. JH's plan to maintain other departments on present footing is approved.
Offers arguments and evidence to support GM's protest to Charles Wood, Chancellor of Exchequer, on 7 Feb. 1851, against plan to abolish Mint refinery.

Left at JH's door recent specimen of fossil breccia from [Aingo?] Island, where WH was detained 50 years earlier. Grateful for manner in which JH handled affair with Benedetto Pistrucci. Attests to Pistrucci's honesty and genius.
As directed by Charles Wood, HH gave formal notice [of contract termination] to Moneyers and sent Wood's letter to G. F. G. Mathison. Forwarded JH's note to Henry Bingley.
Encloses copy of 5 Feb. 1851 letter from C. E. Trevelyan containing Treasury approval for 'part of' Mint reforms recommended by R. L. Sheil and JH. Treasury solicitors will serve notice of termination to Moneyers. HH sees difficulties if proposed changes are not all adopted simultaneously.
Forwards notices from George Maule [terminating contract with Moneyers and G. F. G. Mathison] for JH's signature. Will call meeting with Moneyers for Thursday.
Legality of reforms at Mint may be challenged if Mint indenture is treated as an obsolete document. Details of appointments of Mint officers. Recommends establishing schedule of salaries for all officers and employees.
