The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Thanks JH for a copy of his Essays Q.E.R., and adds some family news.
Encloses report by Lord Overstone [S. J. Loyd, on decimal coinage]. Will answer JH's note tomorrow.
Just now received 'blue book' on decimal coinage from printer. Forwards it to JH. Apologizes for putting this burden on JH, but TS wants to be fully aware of all issues relating to decimal coinage. Answers JH's questions about report.
Quotes 1682 tract by William Petty advising Marquis of Halifax to employ decimal system of currency.
Further account clarification [see SE's 1857-4-28].
Asks JH to read ES's publications for the R.S.L. proceedings concerning colonial magnetic observations. Wishes JH could see R.S.L.'s recent accomplishments in magnetism.
JH's Essays [Essays Q.E.R.] has reached Lowestoft, but AS has been too ill to read them. Sends regards to family.
Note accompanying forwarding of a paper by Otto Struve, and other minor matters.
Thanks for the valuable gift of his Essays Q.E.R. Has just moved into this cottage and would welcome a visit from JH when in the neighborhood.
Is grateful for the copy of his Essays. Query about measuring the focal length of a double object glass. Gives results of his recent observations. Hopes accounts of JH's son are good.
Is pleased that JH approves of his drawings of the planets. Hopes to publish some drawings of the other planets in the future. Has moved his observatory but hopes soon to start observations. Unable to comment on Otto Struve's observations.
Returns his cancel, which he found very amusing. Mrs. De Morgan is now at Hampstead suffering from an incurable complaint. Further comments on the beats of musical consonances and Robert Smith's theories.
Cannot answer JH's question about electricity in heavy showers. Observations were discontinued years ago. Refers to Francis Ronalds's past experiments. Cites 1849 B.A.A.S. Rep. for map of storm observations. Notes changes in polarity of electricity during storms.
Was pleased to receive his letter of the 28th. Proposes to visit JH on 3 June and will travel via Etchingham. Looks forward to meeting Lady JH and the family.
