The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Sending the first volume of the Memoirs for Great Britain.
Has just seen his letter [apparently requesting an article on mineralogy for the Admiralty Manual] on returning to his office. Is very busy at the moment with a survey of coal for George Eden (Earl of Auckland), but could probably help, given time.
It appears that Mineralogy has been assigned to him in the new manual. Comments on this and would like to know who will be writing the chapter on Geology as it is likely to overlap.
Sending him the material on mineralogy for the new manual. Comments on the difficulty of writing this sort of work and gives an outline of how he has written it.
May alter his own article on mineralogy as he pleases.
Returning the proofs of his article for the Admiralty Manual. 25 copies will be enough for him.
Would he look at the accompanying work by O. P. A. P. Dufrénoy. Feels that Dufrénoy would advocate only that which was right.
