The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Agrees to help in other ways than as committee member [see JH's 1855-2-25].
Circular regarding coinage of florins, approved by W. E. Gladstone, plus enquiry sent to English bankers and JH's abstract of replies from bankers, are all stored at Mint. [James] Wilson may obtain copies there. Will forward GR's letter of 14 May 1855 to Mint and ask that these papers be located.
Encloses papers sent to JH from Treasury. R. F. Suft has responses from principal bankers in England; send copies of these at once to [James] Wilson.
Has no power to determine JH's successor to mastership of Mint. Make application to Lord Palmerston [H. J. Temple].
Expects difficulty with wages listed for Patrick Shanahan and one other worker at Mint. Find documents that authorized JH to pay additional overtime wages during coinage pressure of last two years.
Reports status of Crimean medal and Cape medal [Kaffir medal?]. Benjamin Wyon expects to have models ready soon. [Addressed to 'My Lord'.]
Writes to inform GH that JH has seen the Chancellor of the Exchequer and tendered his resignation as Master of the Mint.
JH is very ill; would GA please deal with the disbursement of funds from Melbourne University [see JH's 1854-10-17].
A note of information about the impending forwarding of all Melbourne University materials to GA [see JH's 1855-3-23].
A letter of information, together with a list of all material, sent with the material, to GA [see JH's 1855-4-13].
A letter to accompany Frederick McCoy's 1855-3-9, indicating that it seems appropriate to pay the bills. One of the professors just appointed has died in Australia.
Has had a letter from Melbourne University, with instructions to transfer all the money to Melbourne's agent in London [see GA's 1855-5-30]; JH is slowly recovering.
