The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Agrees to serve on proposed commission of enquiry into state of Cambridge University, provided that JH may resign if enquiry lasts more than one year.
Accepts position as Master of Mint. Asked Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] to specify housing arrangements for JH. Will reside with friend [Eneas Mackintosh] at 17 Montague Square until JH hears from JR.
Government allowance for JH's residence [in London] is sufficient. Will make necessary arrangements for housing while awaiting official notice to assume Mastership of Mint.
Will report on recent changes in supply and demand for precious metals after JH contacts persons named in JR's letter.
Official report on international supply and demand for gold and silver, with projection of supply for next twenty years.
Invites JH to join Bishop of Chester [John Graham] and George Peacock as member of royal commission of enquiry into state and revenues of Cambridge University.
Annual salary of Master of Mint was reduced to £1000 upon R. L. Sheil's resignation, and office was declared non-political. Proposes to submit JH's name to Queen as next master.
Glad that JH accepted Mastership of Mint. Will provide annual housing allowance of £500. George Grey will take steps necessary to put JH into office.
Directs JH to investigate international supply and demand for gold and silver and to make projection for next twenty years. Refer to [J. R.] Macculloch and [James?] Wilson for information.
Does not want JH to enquire into the University of Oxford. JH may resign at the end of the year.
Sends Mr. Benme's [?] letter and prospectus. Wants JH's opinion on whether the Queen should dedicate it.
Cannot nominate [Richard] Jones for position at Fenly. Has already given another name to the Queen.
