The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Sending the first fruits of the enterprise of Dr. J. L. Krapf.
Has forwarded four boxes of geological specimens by the Bosphorus; these are the illustrations for [Andrew] Bain's map. Peace is about to be declared in the Kaffir War. There have been several bush fires and one almost damaged Feldhausen.
The balances in the Mint are not adequate for the work WM wants to do.
RB's certificates were issued in 1825 by now-abolished Mint Board. Explains reorganized administration of Mint.
C. E. Trevelyan's corrections to report. Arrangement for disposing of refinery is officially ratified and may be mentioned. Include payments for Moneyers' equipment, but omit reference to standards. Trevelyan knows nothing of Benedetto Pistrucci's memorial.
In [Henry] Rich's absence, JH does not know how to process claims by apprentice moneyers F. R. Brande and Henry Finch. Ask for advice from Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood]. Henry Bingley's concern for apprenticeship of Bingley's son.
Sends duplicate of report to Parliament that JH submitted to Chancellor of Exchequer. W. T. Brande's plan to resign professorship.
How should JH deal with Benedetto Pistrucci's sudden and temperamental resignation [as chief medallist]?
Assignment of residences to Mint officials.
Does not know how to reply to Robert Mushet's claim for compensation. Can this case be reconsidered?
Added CT's suggested paragraphs to report. There is no documentary evidence to support [non-political] basis of Mastership of Mint. Suggests issuing a warrant to that effect.
[Marked 'Private.' Non-political basis of Mastership of Mint] rests solely on Charles Wood's verbal communication. Regrets Benedetto Pistrucci's effort to resign [as chief medallist].
Returns letters of Jasper Atkinson. Issue of moneyers appears to have been closed by decision of lords of Treasury on 8 July 1851. Sees no reason to reconsider it. [JH Note on verso: Abstract of two letters from Jasper Atkinson to Sir John Russell, prime minister, requesting compensation to moneyers for lost income at Mint.]
Has reconsidered and dismissed JH's previous plan. Will explain reason to [?] in person later today. Please change wording in document regarding Master's salary.

Instruct Mr. [Housard?] not to 'twist off and distribute' until we have more proof. Anthony de Rothschild visited Mint today to learn when he can take possession [of refinery]. Treasury solicitors should arrange this lease soon.
