The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Stunned to learn that WB's letter to Edward Sabine was interpreted by B.A.A.S. committee as WB's resignation from Kew Observatory. Encloses copy of resolution terminating WB. Plans to fight it.
Failed to obtain interview with Edward Sabine. B.A.A.S. committee considers WB finished [see WB's 1850-6-14], yet claims rights to WB's report on luminous meteors, which WB submitted after involuntary termination. WB wants report returned to him. Plans no more work in science. Thanks JH for ten years of assistance and kindness.
Congratulates JH for appointment as next Master of Mint. WB at Mint for 25 years. Offers any assistance JH may need.
Received Dr. [T. R.] Robinson's memorial to John Russell. Believes six-foot reflector could have been obtained as easily as a three-foot reflector.

Received royal warrant to appoint commission of inquiry into state of Cambridge University. Asks JH to attend between 16 and 22 Oct. Also inviting Adam Sedgwick and John Romilly. Wants joint meeting with Oxford inquiry commission, headed by Bishop of Norwich.
Cambridge University Commission met formally for first time today at Treasury Chambers.
C. E. Trevelyan asks JH to describe stock that JH plans to post as security bond for office of Master of Mint. Deposit stock in names of Treasury officials.
Received documents of 1837 evidence from JH. Forwarded letter to JH's former address, 17 Montague Square, before learning of JH's new address [32 Harley St.].
