Inconceivable that JH merely writes 'J'accepte' (I accept) in response to the great honor AQ bestows upon him by dedicating his book to JH. Congratulates AQ on his 'fresh contribution to statistical knowledge.' Has just completed his catalogue of approximately 10,000 double and multiple stars.

Thanks JH for writing. Complains of obstacles to his work. Happy to see JH recognizes work begun by Blaise Pascal and continued by famed mathematicians. Asks JH to respond to AQ's wish to dedicate his book [L'Anthropométric] to JH with only one word: 'J'accepte.'

Is working on humans and their proportions. Encloses brochures. Wishes to dedicate L'Anthropométric to JH.

Gratified by JH's 'sympathy and approbation,' and that JH's writing and spirit remain 'firm' and 'fresh.'

Thanks for work on diamagnetism and magne-crystallic action [Researches on Diamagnetism (1870)], which JH is excited to read. Mentions long-abandoned plans for magnetization experiments. Envies those who can see JT's 'magic' experiments at Royal Institution.

Thanks JH for favorable opinion of JS's paper, as expressed to Hugh Martin. Comments on JH's remarks on allotropy, and on connection between physics and life. Believes Germans preeminent in physiology.

Thanks for paper on action of rays 'of high refrangibility' on gases and vapors. Attempts to understand reflection of wave motion on particles with diameters 'incomparably smaller' than length of wave.

ES has been forwarded letter explaining why 'great telescope' at Melbourne will not work and suggesting construction corrections, on which JH, who believes such 'a priori condemnation' unjustified, comments herein.

Cannot attend Eclipse Committee meeting but suggests that an observer carefully look for planets interior to Mercury's orbit, which would, if existing, reach conjunction during total solar eclipses.

Approves of ES's actinometric methods, but wonders about absorbent power of alcoholic liquid. Laments 'sad conclusion' to career of 'Hansa,' and hopes her companion is more successful.

Discusses significance of Col. Napier's pendulum observations to research on earth's constitution and gravitation.

Thanks for many works, especially double star catalogs, about which JH requests further information, and which will help JH's attempt to compile digest of all measures of all known double stars.

Thanks for telegram and has dispatched papers about absorption power of actinometer liquid. Hopes letter written in Lady Sabine's handwriting does not indicate serious illness of ES.

Thanks JH for mention of him in Outlines Astr. Sends detailed observations of Alpha Centauri system.

Is preparing a catalogue of all double star observations, and is having much difficulty with the observations of J. H. Mädler.
