Desires permission to present JH's 'diagram of "macularity"' to the R.A.S.
Desires permission to present JH's 'diagram of "macularity"' to the R.A.S.
The research shows no particularly 'maculiferous' area on the sun, but WS may, as WS requested, present 'data' to the R.A.S. Has noticed two new spots on helioautographs on 20 and 27 April.
Discusses the different strata of the ocean and [William] Carpenter's lecture on deep sea dredging. Is digging an artesian well.
Sends two copies of JH's 'macular conspectus.' Mr. Titterton was very pleased that JH approved of his work.
Sends diagrams showing three new couplets of sunspots. The sun is entering a new phase of activity. Sends drawings made with a glass pen by his son Alexander.
Thanks JH for the drawings. Will send new solar autographs showing macula. Is working on the autographic series of the activity of the sun during its 11 year period.
Discusses the movement of the 'great group' of sunspots over the last six months. Asks WS to sign a certificate for his son [John].
Has been trying to make pendulum curves. Believes they may help explain the different sunspot forms. Thanks JH for the spectroscopic observation memoirs.
Thanks WS for August 29 photographs. Is sending JH's son's [John's] certificate. Pities the 'fallen Emperor' [Napoleon III].
Is looking for an observer for a newly-mounted telescope in India for the December 1871 eclipse. Would JH's son John be available?
Does not know what commitment of John Herschel (JH's son) would be for December 1871, but encourages GA to communicate with him [see GA's 1871-3-13].
About a title change for the Astronomer Royal's chief assistant.
Some comments about the proposed title change [see GA's 1870-7-31].
Apologizes for not writing often. Has been ill. 'Moderate' use of 'Coca de Peru' [cocaine] helps. Is working on a 'General Catalogue of double stars reduced to 1830.0.' Acknowledges works received.
Inconceivable that JH merely writes 'J'accepte' (I accept) in response to the great honor AQ bestows upon him by dedicating his book to JH. Congratulates AQ on his 'fresh contribution to statistical knowledge.' Has just completed his catalogue of approximately 10,000 double and multiple stars.
Thanks JH for writing. Complains of obstacles to his work. Happy to see JH recognizes work begun by Blaise Pascal and continued by famed mathematicians. Asks JH to respond to AQ's wish to dedicate his book [L'Anthropométric] to JH with only one word: 'J'accepte.'
Offers JH the first exemplar of AQ's work [Physique sociale]. Realizes no one will ever appreciate years of work that it has taken.
Reiterates his congratulations to AQ for his work on statistics. Believes AQ will have many readers. Mentions that JH is now eighty years old.
Is working on humans and their proportions. Encloses brochures. Wishes to dedicate L'Anthropométric to JH.
Thanks JH for accepting dedication. This has brought AQ utmost pleasure. Has dedicated few works. Expresses his esteem for JH's character and talent.
