The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Discussion of contract with [Joshua] Field.
Silver was purchased for Mint on basis of [P. N.] Johnson's assay. Such purchases usually require assay by Henry Bingley. Records show that Bingley entered Mint in 1820.
[Joshua] Field appears satisfied with Mint contract.
Sends document from Maudslay and Field for JH to examine and forward to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Mint holiday for Queen's birthday. Will arrange with Mr. Peligot for inspection.
Benedetto Pistrucci should not exhibit [Waterloo] Medal on his own, but 'by permission of the Master of the Mint.' Mr. Peligot did not show up at Mint on Saturday. Forwards two letters, one from [J. D.] Forbes.
Maudslay, Sons, and Field will not lower their bid offer [for contract coinage work].
Informed C. E. Trevelyan that Maudslay, Sons, and Field will not lower their bid [for contract coinage work]. HH believes that Mint should no longer seek outside contractors. No need to meet at Treasury today.
Encloses HH's semi-official letter regarding staff for Coining department. JH may forward it to Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] with JH's own letter. Encloses monthly accounts for JH's signature.
Nothing to report from Treasury. Hopes JH is recovering from cold.
Messrs. Rennie submitted estimate [for contract coinage work] yesterday that HH considers preposterous.
Treasury rejected all bids [for contract coinage work] and called for establishing coining facilities within Mint. Sends copy of such plan that HH already prepared for JH's signature.
Sends note from J. T. Pratt arranging meeting. [JH annotation: 'National Debt Office, Old Jewry, Wednesday.']
Will search for papers and be at Treasury at appointed time. Found Oxford more beautiful than expected.
Will meet JH tomorrow. Mint staff is taking over rooms from Moneyers. Transition is going smoothly. Joseph Nicoll is dying and will probably not draw much compensation.
Sends W[illiam] Lalor with letters for JH. Will go to Treasury at four o'clock.
Recovering from illness.
