The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Is grateful to JH for proposing EL as a candidate for the R.S.L. Has been experimenting with ozone; comments on his observations.
Hears that his chance of success at the R.S.L. is good. [John?] Lee will forward the certificate to JH for presentation to the R.S.L.
Please accept the enclosed book, which he has dedicated to JH. Has been unsuccessful at the R.S.L. Hopes some day to have ample means with which to pursue science.
Encloses account of a meteor seen on the 27th; pass it over to JH's son as it may be useful. Has been making observations on ozone.
Ozone powders are in dry state. Intends tomorrow to make experiments with ozone using a kite. Can JH inform him about the amount of nitric acid in the air.
Sending a paper he has written on his ozone experiments; please communicate it to the R.S.L. if JH thinks it worthy. Would JH request the R.S.L. to re-suspend EL's certificate as he seems certain of some support from Council. Will soon complete his work on ferns.
Encloses a paper on a hail and snow storm, which hand over to the British Meteorological Society when he has read it. Would JH request the R.S.L. Secretary to re-suspend his certificate as he understands he has a good chance of being elected this year.
Sends some queries regarding meteor showers.
Would like to become a member of the Board of Directors of the Midland Railway for which there is a vacancy. Would welcome a testimonial from JH.
Would like to print in his own Treatise on Atmospheric Phenomena JH's account of the Autora Borealis of May 1843. Had a large batch of papers from Sir Thomas Brisbane. Sends one of his weekly accounts.
Sends meteorological observation charts from Highfield House Observatory.
Sends copies of observatory's printed reports, 1859-60.
