The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

JH's conjectures are natural but Augustus De Morgan had nothing to do with JL's Treatise on Probability. JL wrote it in conjunction with J. E. Drinkwater Bethune, although the title page does not show the names of the authors. Understands what JH means about the moon but cannot see what will be gained. Sorry to hear of JH's mishap.
Relating to writing for the Cornhill Magazine, and spare copies of the Cape Results.
Thanks JH for translation of Iliad. AS's health has been poor. Invites the Herschels to Norwich.
Sends letter from Mr. Rüppell, who wishes to get a copy of R.A.S. medal.
Was pleased to obtain JH's news regarding ice. Agrees with him about metals of alkalis in the earth. Further regarding volcanoes.
Sends articles he has written for the English Encyclopaedia. Still awaiting results of the professorship at Addiscombe.
If he intends attending the B.A.A.S. meeting in October he hopes that he will stay at St. John's Lodge. Lady and Miss Herschel are welcome.
Should not imagine that he is declining when a hot day comes along. Regarding Thomas Harriot and his theological views.
Assistant Samuel Hunter will send WP's observations to JH. Original intent was to confirm JH's nebulae, but WP soon found new nebulae. Trouble finding good assistants. Note on new transit instrument.
Stormy night followed by calm morning. Balloon is now filling for 9 a.m. liftoff.
Lady K. B. Kane will erect tablet to her aunt Elizabeth Baily in Thatcham Church. Comments on International [Exhibition].
Thanks JH for mentioning HH's paper. Attributes electrical phenomena to 'a material element,' perhaps a modified form of ether, distinct from other matter.
