Legal problems with copper coins for New Brunswick.
JH should receive authority soon for appointing John Goldsmith. George Rennie is angry that E. W. Ward gathered valuable information from Rennie regarding machinery for Sydney branch mint, but then gave contract to another manufacturer. Expect Treasury Board to ask JH for report on this. Perhaps Ward can 'pacify' Rennie.
Detained in travel; will return Monday. Recommends John Goldsmith as supplementary clerk. Advises against transferring Henry Finch or F. R. Brande from Coining to Melting departments.
Surprised by length of spectrum produced by the combustion of metals, using electricity.
HF and F. R. Brande received similar appointments, but HF's annual salary is £100 while Brande's is £150. Asks JH to raise HF's salary to £150. [JH annotation: Replied on 19 July.]
Disappointed by JH's response. Believes HF's case is identical to that of F. R. Brande. Lists benefits accruing to Brande that HF does not have. Asks JH to reconsider raise in HF's salary.
Still believes that HF's experience and competence are equal to those of F. R. Brande. Plans to appeal directly to Treasury.
JH may call on James Wilson this afternoon.
Arranges visit to Royal Mint for Prince Albert Edward and Prince Alfred.
Prince Albert has postponed visit to Royal Mint for two princes until after Easter.
Gratitude for receipt of medals struck by Prince Albert Edward and Prince Alfred during their enjoyable visit to Royal Mint.
Lord Aberdeen [George Hamilton-Gordon] will see JH at 11 o'clock this morning.
Forwards coinage return, assay book, and one letter to JH during JH's illness.
[Marked 'Private.'] Hopes that none of HH's actions led JH to resign as master of Mint. Plans to announce HH's own retirement from Mint at end of month.
Grateful for JH's assurance [that HH did not upset JH]. No draft for Mr. Mocatta is required today. E. W. Ward and HH will meet JH at Treasury tomorrow.
Forwards bank documents and letter from Charles Elouis containing last month's finances. Asks JH to sign check for £10,000 for Mr. Mocatta, who does not want to be paid [for silver deliveries] through Bank of England.
HH gave instructions to prepare for coining 500,000 half sovereigns. JH may inform Robert Mushet of this.
Forwards two notes from Mr. Mocatta, who wants to paid for silver before delivering it. HH objects; there should be no more payments prior to delivery.
Sends papers that JH requested. H. U. Addington requested permission for Russian officer to visit Royal Mint. Mr. Mocatta wants second payment but has not yet delivered silver. Charles Elouis will investigate paying Mocatta through bullion office of Bank of England, as J. W. Morrison used to do. Reports 1797-99 copper coinage by Matthew Boulton.
Forwards recent letters. The Times article today points out deficiency in supply of silver coins.
