Sees too many difficulties in optics of JH's proposed telescope. Can build mechanical portion, but not by March as JH requires. Cannot give estimate, because design is too novel.
Will begin building components that JH identified as most immediately needed. Confirm scale of JH's drawings. Will send samples of prism glass for JH to inspect. Cannot yet estimate cost.
Suggests modifying square base of JH's telescope to round base. Estimates cost at £80 to £100.
Refuses to risk GD's funds by giving cost estimate for unusual telescope, especially if R.S.L. expects GD to pay for any expenses over estimate. Regretfully stops manufacture of telescope.
Returns the polarizing apparatus by the Windsor coach, and is grateful for the loan of it. Hopes to supply Dr. Jackson with a suitable instrument. Sending a paper on parallel plates.
Would be pleased if JH would obtain some flint-glass for him when he goes to Munich.
Gratitude for receipt of JH's Cape Results.
